You won’t believe how often people ask me, “How do I get my children’s book published?” I always have time to chat and share my experiences with those entering the industry, but I’ve gone one step further and written it all down in this newsletter, so even more people can benefit from it.
I sometimes I wonder why people ask me for advice when there are so many talented authors and illustrators way ahead of me. But then I realize that sometimes it’s better to seek guidance from someone who’s just a few steps ahead. Their advice is often more relatable and can easily lead to action. Even though I haven’t achieved a lot compared to some, I’ve gone from not making art for over a decade to having two books published and another one on the way, in a few short years… well, that’s not too bad, right?
Since this is the season of giving, I wanted to give you the gift of helping you get your book published. It’s also a massive thank you to all the incredible people who’ve given me advice and supported me along the way.
And as a special thank-you to all of you who’ve been there for the journey , I’m giving away a free wallpaper. Just click the link to download it and enjoy!
This month, the illoguild question is “What are you Grateful for?”
Members of the illoguild (an international group of author/ illustrators) all answer the same question as each other every month. The answers are published in our monthly newsletter. Please have a read and also join us for our monthly live chat (link). This month we are discussing “How to Take an Illustration Brief from start to Finish” - and here is my newsletter on the topic.
And to answer the questions- I am grateful to all the people who have helped me in this industry - from authors, illustrators, designers, friends, family, pod-casters, teachers, librarians, book stores… the list goes on!
In this newsletter, I’ll share some great places to start to get your book published - based on my own journey.
When it comes to submitting your work to publishers, it’s important to remember that each publisher has their own unique requirements and submission processes. To find out when they are open for submissions and how to submit, you’ll need to visit their individual websites. You can find a list of Australian publishers here. Just do a search in your own country and make a list.
In general, when submitting to a publisher, you’ll typically need to include the following:
A query letter introducing yourself and providing a brief elevator pitch of your book, along with information on why you’re writing it and who your target audience is. There are plenty of online resources available to help you craft a compelling query letter.
A full script in PDF or Word format.
And if you are an Author/ Illustrator
The full story, accompanied by a storyboard that communicates the illustrations for each page. Stick figures or rough drawings are perfectly acceptable. You can condense this onto a single A4 page, as I mentioned in my previous newsletter.
One to three final illustrations in full color.
A Cover.
A character sheet, showing illustrated representations of your character engaged in different activities.
You may also consider approaching literary agents for representation.
Patience and perseverance are key in this journey. It’s important to remember that it can take time and you may face many rejections along the way. But don’t let that discourage you! Have you heard of the 100 rejections club? It’s a great concept that reminds us that rejection is just a part of the process. The more you put yourself out there, the greater your chances of finding a home for your picture book. So keep going, stay positive, and believe in your work. You’ve got this!
Self-publishing is also a fantastic option, and it doesn’t mean that you weren’t able to secure a traditional publisher. In fact, many authors choose self-publishing for a variety of reasons, such as the ability to bring their work to market quickly, the potential for higher profits (instead of a small percentage of sales), and the freedom to have complete control over the final product. It’s a wonderful way to showcase your creativity and share your book with the world on your own terms.
If you need assistance reaching the stage of submitting to publishers or self-publishing, you can hire editors and art directors for private assessments. Here are two options I’ve used:
Leonie Tyle (for writing) - she helped me with a story a few years back, and recently provided an endorsement for Mia’s Glamma
Mallory Grigg (for illustration)
Joining a critique group can also be helpful. You can find groups through organizations like SCBWI or by connecting with fellow illustrators from online groups or local networks. I am part of the illoguild - please check out the work of my fellow illustrators substack!
Social media groups, particularly on platforms like Facebook and Instagram, can be great resources for connecting with others in the industry. Look for local meetups and events. The Cardboard Box Illustrators group is one I found this way.
Conferences like KidLit VIC and CYA can provide opportunities for networking and pitch meetings, and some offer assessments as well. Check their websites for more information.
Additionally, you can take courses to improve specific areas of your craft. I’ve personally taken courses through MATS, the Illustration Department, and Skillshare. Masterclass and Good Ship Illustration are also popular options among friends.
Don’t underestimate the power of friends and family—they can provide valuable perspectives and support. Reach out to people in related fields, such as graphic designers, parents, teachers, authors, artists, and marketers, for advice and guidance.
I want to express my gratitude to everyone who has supported me along the way—those who encouraged me, introduced me to people, provided feedback, advice, and shared special moments.
And I’m extremely grateful to members of the illoguild!!! I wouldn’t be where I am without you! Jen Jamieson, Jen Gubicza, Katie Stack, Brenda Harris, Tammy Angelis, Adam Ming, Damjana Loddelina, Rose LiHou, Chantelle Holt and Noreen Anne.
Additionally, two charities continue to support are Room to Read and The Indigenous Literacy Foundation.

Here are some podcasts that I’ve found helpful and are definitely worth a listen
And a HUGE thank you to my publishers EK Books and IP KIDS and the wonderful and talented authors (Charlotte Birkmanis, Josie Montano and Deb Frenkel) whose books I have had the privilege of illustrating.
