What is it?
DTIYS or “Draw this in your style” is when an artist puts their work on social media and asks other artists to produce their own version.
It’s sort of like ‘fan art’ or ‘spin-off art’.
How to participate?
Go to your favorite social media platform (mine’s instagram) and search #dtiys #drawthisinyourstyle or #dtiyschallenge
Pick an artwork that inspires you
Create your own version- feel free to change the colours, composition, and even medium
Post your work, tag the original artist and post their work as an additional image.
The upside:
Connecting with like minded people and being part of a community.
Seeing that there are many ways to tackle a problem.
So many choices are made for you such as composition, subject matter, colour palette, so you don’t have to think too much.
You’ll be practicing and learning new skills.
It may inspire you to do other projects and make more art.
It can help with a creative block.
And most of all - it’s fun!
The downside:
It may lead you down the path of comparing your self to others (I’ll save this for another post)
How DTIYS helped me
In December 2020, I was a little bit stuck with what to draw next.
I was scrolling through Instagram and came across Jen Jamieson’s draw this in your style. The image spoke to me and I decided to jump in. It help me to develop my style, make new connections and land my next commission.
The image above shows my first DTIYS’s.
I can’t wait to my own DTIYS challenge one day soon.
